SLEEPING WITH LIGHT ON MAY CAUSE CANCER
Russel J. Reiter, Ph.D., ProfessorBowman Gray School of Medicine
1964 (210) 567-3859
REITER@UTHSCSA.EDU
KIDS who sleep with the light on could risk leukemia, parents were warned.
Scientists have found the body needs darkness to produce a chemical that fights cancer.
Even switching the light on for the toilet, staying up late, traveling across time zones, or the light from street lamps can stop enough melatonin being made, they say.
The body needs the chemical to prevent damage to DNA and its absence stops fatty acids reaching tumours and preventing them growing. Texas University Prof Russell Reiter, who led the research, said: 'Once you go to bed you should not even switch the light on for a minute.
'Your brain immediately recognises the light as day and melatonin levels drop.'
Rates of childhood leukemia have doubled in the past 40 years.
About 500 youngsters under 15 are diagnosed with the disease each year and around 100 die. A conference on childhood leukemia in London yesterday heard that people were being subjected to more light at night than ever.
This suppressed the production of melatonin which normally happens between 9pm and 8am.
Past research has shown those most affected, like shift workers, had higher levels of breast cancer.
Blind people, who are not vulnerable to fluctuations of melatonin, have lower rates of cancer, it was found.
Parents are advised to use dim red or yellow bulbs if their youngsters are scared of the dark।

What is Cerebral Palsy?

A "spastic" is a person with cerebral palsy. This is a disorder of movement appearing in the early years of life. It is due to damage or failure to develop normally in a small part of the brain controlling these activities.
Cerebral palsy takes many forms- in fact no two spastic people are exactly the same. Some are less affected that they have no obvious disability. Others may be clumsy in their walk or they may have difficulties with their limbs or with muscles that help with speech. Some are even unable to stand or sit and thus, are unable to do even simple things for themselves.
Sometimes the damage involves some part of the brain as well. This leads to deafness and other disabilities involving perception. Many spastic children also have learning difficulties, which makes them slow to mature intellectually.
However, spastic people sometimes have higher than average intelligence though many are slow in catching up due to their handicaps. They often find it hard to control their facial expressions and may seem to be feeble-minded or even to be mentally retarded but some of those who seem to be severely disturbed are on the contrary very active intellectually and not least affected by the disorder.
Parents with spastic children are advised to bring their children to the centre as early as possible so that the appropriate therapy can be administered to the children with greater effectiveness.
These therapies, physio, speech and occupational therapy are carried out by experienced and dedicated personnel.
Furthermore, children of schooling age are enrolled to the School Section while younger children are given proper outpatient treatment. Adult students are employed in the Sheltered Workshop.
Moreover, the Association also carries out interesting and beneficial activities such as sports, music session, swimming, gardening as well as needle-work.

WESAK DAY PRAYER

Buddhists will be celebrating Wesak Day tomorrow। Many will throng the temples starting from 11pm tonight।
For those who are unable go to the temple, there are some meaningful ways to commemorate Wesak Day i.e. giving donations to the victims of:
1. Myanmar Cyclone Victims
2. China Sichuan Province Earthquake Victims
On this Wesak Day, let us remember the teachings of Buddha, as one rhyme goes:
`Some have too much and yet do crave
I have little and seek no more;
They are but poor though much more they have
And I am rich with little store.
They poor, I rich, they beg, I give;
They lack, I have; they pine, I live.'
************************************
I am not rich, but I am contented.
To all the people who are suffering the greatest, I pray for them to have strength to live on and leading towards a brighter day tomorrow.
Amitaba.

Chemotherapy Before Breast Surgery is Valuable-Many Eligible Patients Are Unaware of Therapy Option
She may have regretted having performed the surgery a little too rush, as most patient would have the thought of cancer cells will spread very quickly if the tumor is not remove soonest. Taking into consideration the agony and pain avalanched upon you hearing the bad news from the doctor, no one can blame you for losing that sturdiness.
Come back to the above subject, I will leave it to you bright readers to judge for yourself. As the article said,
"We can't say that neoadjuvant therapy is better for survival, but we can say neoadjuvant therapy is not worse, and it has its advantages".
Isn't it obvious that going thru the Chemotherapy in a stronger body before surgery is a wider choice?

You Made A Difference!
Perhaps I am getting older by the day, all I pray for everyday is the safety and health for my family. Celebration on this kind of occasion does not seem to be much of a significant event anymore. Instead, I would prefer the world to rejoice "Parents'day" to honor both very important peoples in our lives.
But to my dearest and sweetest children, mummy appreciate the notes and presents from the bottom of my heart and you guys are the most wonderful kids in this world.
Remember, a person with a generous heart and compassion for all beings leads the most blessed life.

An e-card written in the cold winter from down under by Vivian....but delivered with loads of warmth feelings, mama loves it!

DIGITAL INFRA-BREAST THERMOGRAPHY : AN ALTERNATIVE TO MAMMOGRAM
Dread feeling the squeeze?Breast thermography has come to town - a much easier way than mammography to detect breast cancer, writes MELISSA HENG
Dr Wong:A session lasts all of five minutes ... The machine will take a series of infra-red shots, which will be sent to a computer and the result of the readings will be out within minutes.
Breast cancer makes up almost 30 per cent of all female cancers here. Each year, about 1,000 women are diagnosed with the condition. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, although a small number of men do get it too.
Those interested may contact Clinique Suisse at 6235-4040 .The clinic is located at 290 Orchard Road, #08-01, Paragon Medical Centre

Breast Cancer
Hubby came back last night with a bad news. A friend of us was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer and was immediately sent in for mastectomy. All this happened in less than a month.
The questions that clouded my mind were:
1. She is a very health concious person
2. She exercises regularly
3. She promotes cancer awareness and preventative ways of living
4. She is a very kind person that helps out in charitable organisations (Although this is not relevant, but I can't help but to question myself.)
Why bad luck has to befall on her? So much so that I have come to a conclusion that no one has the immunity to be exempted from cancer attack, no matter how much we try to prevent it.
I would like to share the following information with you on cancer which I've received earlier:
____________________________________________________
Medical Info : CANCER
Please note the following :
CANCER : Not all cancers are the same. 1/3 is curable. 1/3 is preventable.
2 factors of cancer that cannot be controlled are AGE & FAMILY HISTORY.
CAUSES OF CANCER:
1. Smoking is very often the main cause of cancer.
It kills us silently and drains money from us quietly. There’re 4,000 harmful chemicals (though in diluted form) in one stick of cigarette. Taking one puff is 600 times worse than inhaling exhaust fumes from vehicles.
2. Some foods that cause cancer is :
a. Barbecued Food
b. Deep Fried Food
c. Overheating Meat
d. Food that is high in fat causes our bile to secrete acid that contains a chemical which is a promoter of cancer cells.
e. Food that contains preservatives, too much salt or nitrates, e.g. canned food, salted egg & veggies, sausages, etc.
f. Overnight Rice (where Aflatoxin is accumulated)
g. Food that is low in fibre : Our body needs 25gm of both soluble & insoluble fibre daily. We must drink at least 1.5 litres of plain water a day.
h. Contaminated Food (e.g. moulded bread causes our body to secrete toxins that may eventually lead to liver cancer in the long run. Never eat bread that is kept in room temperature for more than 2 days especially in a humid weather.)
3. Types of fat and which is the best?
Highly Recommended for Health :
a. Olive Oil - It does not absorb in our body.
b. Fish Oil - Omega 3 (contained in NI’s Circulytes) has poly-unsaturated fat. It’s good for our brain cells.
c. Peanut Oil - It contains Vitamin E. A small dosage is recommended only.
4. Not Recommended for Health
a. Vegetable Fat - Palm oil is worse than coconut oil. It is high in cholesterol and highly unsaturated.
b. Coconut Oil - It has saturated fat.
5. Specific Food & Beverages
a. Egg when eaten too much can cause High Colon Cancer, Risk Ovary Cancer, Prostate Cancer.
b. Cabbage is highly recommended for health reason.
c. Tomato is best eaten raw with a bit of olive oil for better absorption. Other alternative is to take tomato sauce. Do not boil – tomatoes became acidic when boiled.
d. A little coffee is good because it contains 2 anti- oxidants. Inhale coffee aroma for half each day is equivalent to eating 2 oranges a day. However, the residue of over-burned coffee is extremely bad for health. It can cause cancer.
e. Tea, as long as it is in its original tealeaves and not processed into BOH or Lipton packets, it is good for health. Tea contains 30 anti-oxidants. Recommended dosage is a cup a day.
EXERCISE AND BE FIT
Have a balanced lifestyle. Exercise regularly.
F : Frequency : 3 to 5 times a week.
I : Intensity : Exercise till we sweat and breath deeply.
T : Types of exercises : Find one that suits our age, lifestyle…
HAVE REGULAR CHECK-UP once we reach the age of 45 & above, it is recommended that we go for regular comprehensive health examination. Early detection can save lives.

Six Billion Paths to Peace

Mr David Fishman from the Shinnyo-en Foundation said this in the email, “For many of us, a path to peace is about performing small selfless acts of kindness they take in their daily lives, which in return often inspire others to do the same; perhaps by sharing your efforts on your blog, and others can be compelled to contribute as well”.
There are no great things, only small things with great love. Happy are those.
