Indonesia - Sumatra, Padang Earthquake

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck western Indonesia on the island of Sumatra on Wednesday 30 September 2009, collapsing buildings and causing landslides in coastal cities and towns.

MERCY Malaysia
will deploy a surgical and medical team consisting of an orthopaedic surgeon, a general surgeon, an anaesthetist, general practitioners (GPs) and nurses to treat the earthquake victims in and around Pariaman which is located some 80 km north of Padang, Sumatra.

Mercy is also calling for specialised medical volunteers such as an orthopaedic surgeons, general surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses to assist the team in a span of at least two weeks.

Dr Ahmad Faizal, Mercy Malaysia President said Mercy Malaysia would also need at least RM3 million to provide humanitarian assistance to the earthquake victims in Indonesia and urged Malaysians to donate generously.
